WHAT IS A RAINBOW?
A rainbow is caused by sunlight and environmental conditions. In simple words, rainbow is a result of scattering of sunlight on water droplets with seven colors usually seen in the opposite direction of sunlight just after rainfall.
A rainbow is usually seen in the sky just after rainfall.
HOW IS RAINBOW FORMED?
After rainfall, waterdroplets present in the sky undergoes scattering effect.Sunlight entering in to these waterdroplets undergoes scattering effect and hence these sunlight gets scattered in to seven colours.
WHAT ARE THE SEVEN COLOURS OF RAINBOW?
The following are the seven colours of rainbow. They are
- Red
- Orange
- Yellow
- Green
- Blue
- Indigo
- Violet
Why is rainbow Semicircle or bow shaped?
Actually the scattering effect caused by the sunlight on these water droplets will result in the circular rainbow. But the rainbow usually appears as bow shaped. Why?
The reason is that the point of direction of the view of rainbow usually matters. If the rainbow is viewed from the horizontal land we usually see only half portion of the rainbow.
But,in case if the rainbow is viewed from an airplane with suitable conditions, then full circular rainbow can be viewed.
Why rainbow has particular colours?
Sunlight is made up of many wavelength of light. Some of those wavelengths get bent more than others.when the sunlight enters these water droplets, Violet (the shortest wavelength) bends the most, red (the longest wavelength ) bends the least.
So,when the light exits the water droplet, it is separated into all its wavelengths. Hence, Violet will be on the bottom and red on the top.
